 1.  BOSSUET, Jacques Bénigne / [ JOHNSTON, Joseph - translator] /[ WAKE, William ].:   An Exposition of the doctrine of the Catholic Church in matters of Controversie / By the Right Reverend James Benigne Bossuet, counsellor to the King, Bishop of Meaux; formerly of Condom, and preceptor to the Dauphin; first almoner to the Dauphiness.

4 works bound together. 4to. 19.8cmx 16cm x 3.6cm. A very good binding. Contemporary full calf, spine with 4 raised bands and recent brown leather title label. Hinges carefully strengthened (using archival standard materials). Clean text throughout, except for the last leaf of each work, which is slightly soiled. So presumably, all four works were bound together at a later time. The works start with: ''An Exposition of the Doctrine of the Catholic Church in matters of Controversie By the Right Reverend James Benigne Bossuet... Henry Hills...1686.'' -[8pp.]/pp.20/pp.55/[1p. - advert]. Translated by Joseph Johnston (according to the records held by National Library of Scotland). Bound with: ''An Exposition of the Doctrine of the Church of England, in the several articles proposed by Monsieur de Meaux Late Bishop of Condom, in his Exposition of the Doctrine of the Catholick Church. To which is prefix'd a particular account of Monsieur de Meaux's Book. The Third Edition... Richard Chiswell...1687. [4pp.]pp.36/pp.87/[1p. - adverts]. Imprimatur leaf before title. [By William Wake]. Bound with: ''A Vindication of the Bishop of Condom's Exposition of the doctrine of the Catholic Church : In answer to a book entituled, An Exposition of the Doctrine of the Church of England, &c. With a letter from the said Bishop. Permissu superiorum. London : Printed by Henry Hills, printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty, for his household and chappel., 1686.'' [By Joseph Johnston] [2pp.]/pp.222 [i.e. 122]/[4pp. - contents and adverts]. Bound with: '' A Defence of the Exposition of the Doctrine of the Church of England, against the exceptions of Monsieur de Meaux, late Bishop of Condom, and his vindicator... These works were written while James II was on the throne, the Monmouth Rebellion had been crushed and Catholics were given more freedom. In London in 1686 Public chapels were opened, including one in the Royal Palace, the Jesuits founded a large school in the Savoy. However, by 1688 Protestant power was in ascendant, William of Orange had landed and James II subsequently abdicated to France.
