He also tells us why Beckhamsbooks.com specialises in antiquarian religious books.

"Loose pages" will be a monthly publication.

Antiquarian religious book experts: Beckhambooks.com open their doors
eckhambooks is located in the beautiful and historic market town of Sudbury, deep within the Suffolk countryside. Suffolk has been immortalised by the likes of John Constable.
Sudbury itself was the birth place of another famous artist; Thomas Gainsborough. He was born in the town in 1727 and the town hosts the world renowned Gainsborough House museum.

The surrounding area encompasses some of the most picturesque and oldest villages in Suffolk. Long Melford, Lavenham and Kersey are all within 10 miles whilst the famous Constable Country lies some 15 miles to the east. The area is regularly used by television and film companies and the popular TV, series "Lovejoy" was based in Long Melford.

Beckham Books is situated off of the main Sudbury to Colchester road a little way up its own un-made road. You come up to the two large black gates and toot your horn and their two spaniels will give you a welcome bark!

Beckham Books started back in 1990 and has developed from a hobby to a thriving business located in its own purpose built building with over 40,000 books on shelves. The business centres around Helen and Adrian Beckham answering enquiries and sorting and collating new acquisitions.

"I have always had a keen interest in decorative leather bindings. Its amazing that a victorian book of poetry in a very good leather binding can sell for as little as GBP 30.00. Where as if someone wanted a more modern book re-bound in a similar style and quality would cost at least GBP 150.00"

Helen Chief Big Librarian

The religious specialization came about through an accident when they were offered a collection of cookery books and ended up with over 1000 theological books as well! "It was only then, that we realized that there was a demand for this type of book." says Adrian Beckham. "I have always liked leather bindings and the older antiquarian books. As you go back in history it becomes apparent that religion paid an ever important part of everyday life and this is reflected in the books which were produced."
