[ Moravian Church ] London: William Mallalieu & Co. 97 Hatton Garden; also at the Brethren's Congregations and Chapels in Great Britain and Ireland, 1862 . 0 This revised edition of the hymnbook was prepared largely by Br. James Montgomery, and presented to the Provincial Conference of 1847. The liturgy in its present form received the sanction of the General Synod in 1848. Fine leather binding in very good condition. 8vo. 7.25" x 4.5" x 1" [ 18.5cm x 11.4cm x 2.9cm ]. Black morocco with gilt ruled decoration. Spine with 5 raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, and gilt titles. Edges lightly rubbed and gilt dulled. All page edges gilt. Inner gilt dentilles. Original yellow endpapers. Previous owner's details to front free-endpaper: "Edward Hollis Oct 2nd 1871." Contents include: Printed title page; preface; liturgy (prayer book); hymn book (1261 Hymns); index of hymns; table of tunes; ending with one page of adverts. Clean English text throughout. London: Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, Paternoster-Row. 1826 . 0 12mo. pp.18/pp.294 . 16.8cm x 10.5cm x 2.5cm. A very good full leather binding. Polished dark brown calf, bords with a few chips and scuffs. Spine carefully repaired, preserving original black leather title labels: "World Before The Flood". & "Montgomery - London. 1826." Marbled endpapers and matching page edges. * Hope against hope, and ask till ye receive. - The World before the Flood (canto V) James Montgomery (November 4, 1771 - April 30, 1854) was a British editor and poet. Son of a pastor and missionary of the Moravian Brethren, was born at Irvine in AyrshireNovember 4 1771, and educated at the Moravian School at Fulneck, near Pudsey in Leeds. After various changes of occupation and abode, he settled in Sheffield in March 1792 as clerk to Joseph Gales on the 'Sheffield Register' newspaper. On July 4th 1794 he launched and edited the Sheffield Iris, and was twice imprisoned (in 1795, and again in 1796) for political articles for which he was held responsible. In 1797 he published Prison Amusements; but his first work to attract notice was The Wanderer of Switzerland (1806). It was followed by The West Indies (1809), The World before the Flood (1812), Greenland (1819), and The Pelican Island (1828), all of which contain passages of considerable imaginative and descriptive power, but, according to literary analysts, are lacking in strength and fire. He himself expected that his name would live, if at all, in his hymns, and in this his judgment has proved true. Some of these, such as "For ever with the Lord", "Hail to the Lord's Anointed", "Angels from the Realms of Glory, and "Prayer is the Soul's Sincere Desire", are sung wherever the English language is spoken. Probably his best-known poems are the one commemorating Arnold Winkelried [1] and "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief".
