PALMER, Rev. G. H. Palmer, Mus. Doc. The Diurnal After The Use Of the Illustrious Church Of Salisbury. London: Oxford University Press, Humphrey Milford, 1930 . 0 16mo. 16cm x 10cm x 1cm. pp.36/492, minor creases to some corners. Clean english text. Palmer spent many years perfecting a translation of the Sarum Diurnal whose rhythms and accents make it possible to use unaltered the ancient plainsong melodies with the English words. Red page edges have leeched onto internal top edge of last half of book but only affecting top margin, 4 original silk marker ribbons present. Black cloth, gilt title to front and spine. Scarce. VG. Because of its lineage, the Anglo-Catholic liturgical revival, this little book combines the absolute BEST of pre- and post- Reformation liturgy:1. The majesty of the Book of Common Prayer for the PSALTER and the COLLECTS; 2. The richness of the ancient Latin Sarum Rite of England, translated into magnificent "Prayerbook" English ; 3. All texts to be sung have been specially translated for musical suitability (though there is no music in this Breviary) by Dr. Palmer, a renowned Chant musicologist; 4. Newer feasts, unknown to the Sarum Rite or the Book of Common Prayer, have been added. A rare and an awesome testimony to the liturgical scholarship of the Anglican Church's Anglo-Catholic revival.
