"After a distressing life at St Mary's Convent, the 18-year old nun, called Madge Moult, ran away to Manningtree railway station, pursued by a wagon full of nuns who tried to force her back to the nunnery. However, station staff took pity on the girl and helped her escape to London. Her case was taken up by campaigners seeking reform of convents and monasteries and as a result Madge Moult became quite famous and she later undertook a speaking tour, lecturing on convent life and its dangers."(Local Heritage Initiative).
