First edition. 16mo. 12.7cm x 7.4cm. [15pp.]/[3pp.]/pp.134. A very good original full leather binding. Tan leather with ornate art nouveau decoration and titles. All page edges bright gilt. Small leather owner's label to verso of the front board: "Mary Rollin". Engraved portrait frontis of Chaucer, by W. L. Colls, with tissue guard. Title within an ornate border. Clean text througohut with numerous head and tailpieces. The Introduction is by J. Potter Briscoe. Consisting of the: Prologue, modernised by R. H. Horne; The Reve's Tale modernised by R. H. Horne; The Friar's Tale, modernised by Leigh Hunt; The Squire's Tale... modernised by Leigh Hunt; Selection from The Franklin's Tale, modernised by R. H. Horne; Selections from the Flower and the Leaf, modernised by Thomas Powell; The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, modernised by W. Wordsworth. A very good copy in a scarce binding. ** John Potter Briscoe, 1848-1926. Nottingham City Librarian. John Potter Briscoe was born on 20/7/1848 at Lever Edge, near Bolton, Lancashire, the eldest son of John Daly Briscoe, a schoolmaster, and Mary Elizabeth Scowcroft. In 1866 he was appointed as assistant librarian to the Bolton Public Library and three years later moved to Nottingham. He was an original member of the Library Association and a leading figure in the development of professional librarianship. He extended the existing library services particularly to children. The Nottingham Library for Boys and Girls opened in 1882 with a donation of £500 from Samuel Morley, the hosiery manufacturer. Briscoe was a founder of the Nottingham Sette of Odd Volumes, which was a local literary society.
