CANNE, James ** - 17TH CENTURY BIBLE - KING JAMES VERSION . The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the former Translations diligently Compared and Revised. With Marginal Notes, Shewing The Scripture to the best Interpreter of Scripture. London: Printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb deceas'd Printers to the King and most Excellent Majesty. Anno Dom. 1698 . 12mo. A very good original full leather binding. Brown full calf. Boards with simple blind-stamp border. Smooth spine carefully repaired with blind-stamp decoration. Dulled marbled endpapers. Printed title. "To the Reader." signed by John Canne. Clean English text in double columns with marginal references to both sides of each page. No Apocrypha. New Testament title also dated 1698. A well preserved 'pocket' bible. "These marginal matters were prepared by John Canne (d. 1667) who lived for many years abroad, and in 1642 was styled by John Ball - ' The leader of the English Brownists in Amsterdam.' " - See Herbert: 601 and Herbert: 848 (Darlow & Moule: 665). ** John Canne a Baptist minister (d. 1667?), was the author of three sets of notes which accompanied three editions of the Bible. His great ambition was "to make the Bible its own interpreter." His first authenticated version appeared in 1647 at Amsterdam, under the title, The Bible, with Marginal Notes, Shewing Scripture to be the Best Interpreter of Scripture. The work was often reprinted (9 editions, between 1662 and 1754). Orme, in his Bibliotheca Biblica (Edinburgh, 1824), says of it, "The marginal references of Canne are generally very judicious and apposite. They still retain a considerable reputation, though most of the latter editions which pass under the name of Canne's Bible are full of errors, and crowded with references which do not belong to the original author." - See Christian Classics Ethereal Library - Bible Commentaries.
