MAITLAND, Sir Alexander . Power of Attorney from the Honourable Lieutenant General Alexander Maitland to Messrs. Robert Henry George & A. B. Drummond for receiving his pension at Exchequer 1783 0 Folded folio. 12.5" x 8" . Neat hand written text to one side only. Except for notes on verso of last leaf: "Power of Attorney from the Hon'ble Lieut Gen'l Alex Maitland to Messrs. Robert Henry George & A. B. Drummond for receiving his pension at Excheqr." Light soiling to paper and 3 horizontal folds. Text reads: ' Know all men by these present that I the Honble Lieut General Alexander Maitland have made constituted and appointed doth hereby make constitute and appoint Major Robert Henry George and Andrew Berkeley Drummond of Charing Cross in the Parish of Saint Matin's in the Fields in the County of Middlesex Bankers my true and lawfaul attorney's and attorney jointly and separately for me in my name and for my use to ask, demand and receive of and from the letter or letters of His Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer for the time being or whomsoever else doth or may concern all such sum or sums of money that are now due or that at any time hereafter may become due to me and payable upon my account in virtue of my pension granted to me by His Majesty, and upon receipt of the same to give as full and sufficient receipts and discharges as if I myself were personally present hereby ratifying and confirming all and whatsoever my said attorneys or either of them shall do or cause to be done by virtue of these present & in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixth day of October in the twenty forth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the Third of Great Britain Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundred & Eighty Three. He was the son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy.1 He married Penelope Madan, daughter of Martin Madan, on 27 June 1754. He died on 14 February 1820 at age 91. " - See Peerage dot com. *** Frederick Lewis Maitland (1730–1786), a distinguished naval officer, he was born the sixth son of Charles Maitland, the sixth earl of Lauderdale, and his Godfather was Frederick, Prince of Wales. He entered the Navy, rising to the rank of captain and commanding HMS Lively with distinction in 1760. He moved to take command of HMS Elizabeth in 1778, and in 1782 found himself serving under Admiral George Rodney. His capable command of several Navy ships led to a period commanding the Royal yacht between 1763 and 1775. He was promoted to Rear admiral in 1786, but died before the news reached him.
