First edition. A very good original cloth binding. 8vo. pp.335 . 7" x 5.25" x 1.25" . Clean green cloth over bevelled boards. Front board with simple black decoration and a bright gilt illustration "The Mammoth Restored". Spine with bright gilt titles and an illustration of a fossil. Original brown endpapers. Decorated prize label to the verso of the front board: "Barnsbury Park Collegiate School Dec. 1927" (it appears this book has been given as a prize on more than one occasion, the date having been altered). Small lacuna missing from top corner of front endpaper. Clean text and excellent illustrations throughout. Brown spots to the page edges, with just the odd brown spot or blemish encroaching on to the pages. A well preserved book. Strangely COPAC (British Library online) does not list this edition. So it is presumed to be quite scarce. Excerpt from; 'Preface.' : "When I began this volume, it was with the intention of simply translating M. Meunier's work, "Les Animaux d'Autrefois." But I had scarcely entered upon the task before I found that someting fuller, broader, and more detailed was required for the English reader..." ** William Henry Davenport Adams (1828 – 1891), was an English writer and journalist of the 19th century, notable for a number of his publications. He was educated privately, under George Dawson and was soon editing a provincial newspaper in the Isle of Wight, and while still young established a connection with the London press through such journals as the Literary Gazette, the London Journal’ and London Society. He made some reputation in turn as a writer of popular science, a writer for boys, a translator, and a lexicographer. " - See Wikipedia .
