The spine and 4 inset panels on the front show acorns and oak-leaves and an embossed monogram of A. A. Milnes initials on the front cover surrounded by a solid gold gilt circle. Smooth spine with similar decoration and gilt titles. Top & tail of spine carefully strengthened. Rough-cut page edges. Light brown endpapers. Clean text throughout. "These essays are reprinted, with such alterations and additions as seemed proper, from the Sphere, The Outlook, The Daily New, The Sunday Express, and the American Vanity Fair."
